NS Communications presents Let's Talk, a blog series about all things comms

Let's talk about career progression in the internal communication field.

The career progression journey looks super different for each and every one of us in the IC field.

Some of us will have found a clear and accessible pathway through to new and engaging roles, while others may have jumped quite sporadically around educational opportunities and career choices.

I am most definitely a part of the latter.

This is why I think it is really important to share tips, tricks, and insights into the wonderful world of learning and leading in the IC field.

So, I would like to share my go-to map for navigating the internal communication professional development landscape...

Have you read the IC Profession Map over at the Institute of Internal Communication?

It's a really insightful document that is jam-packed with guidance for anyone in our profession, and for the people that recruit or hire us.

I think that in such a dynamic field, having a roadmap can make all the difference. I mean, have you ever noticed that the companies you have either worked for, or with have really different views on your career progression? ...particularly if they are not too sure what your role is to begin with?

I have!

So, here is my super basic snapshot of the map:

Step 1: Foundational Level: Building the Basics

Here, you'll lay the groundwork for your career by developing essential skills and gaining a solid understanding of communication principles. Whether it's crafting engaging content, discovering different communication channels, or learning about the role of internal communications in organisational structure, this stage is all about building a strong foundation.

Step 2: Core Level: Mastering the Essentials

Once you've built a sturdy foundation, it's time to take a deeper look into the core aspects of internal communications. You will expand your skill set, refine your techniques, and begin to take on more responsibility. This could look like developing comprehensive communication strategies and executing impactful campaigns. This is the step where I personally found my confidence level to have increased the most. I was then ready to navigate my way through the complexities of internal communications within multiple organisational structures.

Step 3: Advanced Level: Leading with Authority

You will reach this step as you begin to progress in your career. Here, the focus will shift towards leadership and strategic thinking. You will likely take on senior roles, and potentially even lead teams, whilst shaping the direction of internal communication within your organisation.

Whether it's driving cultural change, aligning communication efforts with business objectives, or championing innovation, this level challenges you to think big and lead with authority.

Step 4: Strategic Level: Shaping the Future

This step is where you will play a key role in shaping the future of internal communications both within your organisation and beyond. You will operate at the highest level, influencing decision-making, driving organisational change, and setting industry standards.

Whether it's pioneering new technologies, shaping thought leadership, or advocating for the value of internal communications, this is where your learning and development will really empower you to leave a lasting impact on the profession.

It's quite the journey, right?

Whilst the map provides a clear framework for career progression in IC, it's important to remember that every journey is unique. Along the way, you'll encounter opportunities, challenges, and unexpected twists and turns.

BUT!

Embrace these experiences.

Continue to learn and grow, and never lose sight of your passion for connecting people and driving positive change through effective internal communication.

Now, I'm aware that my overview only really provides you with a snapshot of the IOIC Profession Map, and so I really do recommend getting your hands on a copy of it.

I'm interested to know, based on my overview above...

Which step are you on?

  • Step One

  • Step Two

  • Step Three

  • Step Four

Also, how are you finding that step?

You'll have to let me know.

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on career progression and the IC Profession Map. Make sure you...
